{"id":845,"date":"2007-01-05T15:54:38","date_gmt":"2007-01-05T13:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=845"},"modified":"2007-01-05T15:54:38","modified_gmt":"2007-01-05T13:54:38","slug":"underestimated-instruments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=845","title":{"rendered":"underestimated instruments"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img id=\"image847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/wp-content\/2007\/01\/sheng.jpg\" alt=\"sheng.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>An unsorted and incomplete list of music instruments that deserve more attention than they get. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monochord\">monochord<\/a>: used by Pythagoras in his investigations on harmony, that ultimately let to the fact that there is now not only a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pythagorean_theorem\">theorem<\/a> but also a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pythagorean_comma\">comma<\/a> named after him (Pytagoras not the monochord).<br \/>\nKazoo: besides singing into it you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ju5j4cobIrU&#038;embed=1\">wake up bus drivers and call dolphins<\/a> with it.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/user.it.uu.se\/~crwth\/bagpipes\/swedish\">swedish bagpipe<\/a>: with only one known player in the 1940&#8217;s they where as close to extinction as an instrument can be.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksanti.net\/free-reed\/history\/sheng.html\">sheng<\/a> (pictured above): the mother of two other underestimated instruments:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/Various+Artists\/Asthmatic+Worm\">akkordeon and melodica<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yamaha.com\/yamahavgn\/CDA\/ContentDetail\/ModelSeriesDetail\/0,,CNTID%253D1118%2526CTID%253D206700,00.html\">VL70-m<\/a> sort of a virtual monochord.
