The german reader may have already read about it in an <a href=\"http:\/\/riesenmaschine.de\/index.html?nr=20121119153257\">article by Aleks Scholz at the blog Riesenmaschine<\/a>, the scientific minded reader may have used it already.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/br><\/p>\n<p>Figshare is an upload facility for (pre-)preprints and seems amongst others to basically fulfill all functions*  which I had proposed in (around 2009?) at the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/golem.ph.utexas.edu\/category\/\">n-category cafe<\/a>, in emails to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=3730\">arxiv.org<\/a> and also at <a href=\"http:\/\/publishing.mathforge.org\/\">Math 2.0<\/a> and which has been described again in more detail in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=3730\">this randform post<\/a> about problems with the dissertation of Germany&#8217;s former minister of defense. The <a href=\"http:\/\/figshare.com\/faqs\">figshare faqs<\/a> describes <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nfigshare allows researchers to publish all of their data in a citable, searchable and sharable manner.<\/p>\n<p>All figures, media, poster, papers and multiple file uploads (filesets) are published under a CC-BY license.<\/p>\n<p>All datasets are published under CC0.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(The CC-BY licence is a socalled <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creative_Commons_licenses\">Creative Commons licence<\/a>, which by the way just celebrates it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.creativecommons.org\/CC10\">tenth birthday<\/a>  with a lot of parties, <a href=\"https:\/\/netzpolitik.org\/2012\/cc-10-geburtstag\/\">even here in Berlin  .<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The security and persistence of your files on figshare makes it easy to prevent plagiarism of your research data, as all uploads are time-stamped.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  :)<\/p>\n<p>Figshare, which was started in Sept 2011 by London based <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plos.org\/mfenner\/2012\/02\/16\/figshare-interview-with-mark-hahnel\/\">Mark Hahnel<\/a> is supported by Digital Science, a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macmillan_Publishers\">Macmillan Publishers Company <\/a> which is owned by Stuttgart based <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_von_Holtzbrinck_Publishing_Group\">Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t yet used Figshare and I haven&#8217;t yet found a definite answer to the question why the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group (which seems neither a non-profit organisation nor did it seem to appear as a distinguished <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corporate_social_responsibility\">CSR<\/a> company -as far as I can tell ? ) would be interested in setting up such an archive.<\/p>\n<p>*(a kind of authenticated &#8220;role based login&#8221; for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digital-science.com\/blog\/posts\/figshare-links-your-desktop-to-the-cloud\">private section<\/a> seems still to be missing (that is for example that professors could have the possibility to log in to the private section of their students))<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leonard Dobusch and John Weitzmann at the CC-10-birthday party randform hasn&#8217;t yet reported on a rather new online tool in scientific publishing which is called figshare.
