{"id":489,"date":"2006-09-28T13:17:31","date_gmt":"2006-09-28T11:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=489"},"modified":"2006-09-28T13:25:10","modified_gmt":"2006-09-28T11:25:10","slug":"twisting-the-meaning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=489","title":{"rendered":"twisting the meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img id=\"image488\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/wp-content\/2006\/09\/friseur.jpg\" alt=\"friseur.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe &#8220;Deutsche Sprachrat&#8221; (german language council) is holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deutscher-sprachrat.de\/\">competition<\/a> for collecting german words, which diffused into other languages &#8211; sometimes by acquiring a new meaning in the process. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nIf you submit a german word (the website is idiotically only in german) by the end of september you can win a trip to Berlin. :)<\/p>\n<p>typical examples are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomodachi.de\/html\/ant\/service\/jpn_woerter.html#deutsch\">japanese<\/a>: arubeito (from arbeit=work, new meaning:student job) <a href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rindfleischetikettierungs%C3%BCberwachungsaufgaben%C3%BCbertragungsgesetz\">french<\/a>: vasistas (from: was ist das = what is this, new meaning: \tborrowed light), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:German_loanwords\">english<\/a>: blitz (from blitz =  lightning, new meaning: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blitz\">see here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The Berlin dialect is quite full of words with foreign origin &#8211; besides english mostly jiddish and french (due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quadriga\">napolonic occupation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huguenot\">Huguenots<\/a>, who brought a cultural boost to Berlin) and of course russian. So already for that reason some Berlin words are hard to understand for the rest of Germany. <\/p>\n<p>And sometimes it is even simpler to produce a new meaning: E.g.
