What one can eventually do about it was mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=1639\">this post<\/a> (namely initiate something like an international science parliament) (see also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=1647\">followup comment to Bee&#8217;s comment<\/a>). Meanwhile more details about the consequences of the US budget cuts became apparent, in particular it seems that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/Biztech\/20085\/page1\/\">US won&#8217;t pay their this-year-share of 160 mio $<\/a> to the international <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iter.org\/\">ITER project<\/a> (which is an international <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_fusion\">nuclear <strong>fusion<\/strong><\/a> research project) &#8211; despite having apparently signed this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/ippcms\/de\/presse\/pi\/14_07_pi.html\">treaty<\/a>. Unfortunately that makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=1526\">these<\/a> rather unplaisant prospectives of nuclear <strong>fission<\/strong> in the US even more likely.<\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#ff0000;\">update 13.9. 09:<br \/>\nWhereas US officials meanswhile seem to have changed their policy towards the european ITER project (-> read e.g. U.S. ITER chief: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.knoxnews.com\/munger\/2009\/05\/us_iter_chief_im_excited_to_ha.html#more\">&#8216;I&#8217;m excited to have some money&#8217;<\/a>) they also seem to get interested in other nuclear fusion technologies, in particular it seems they just recently awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/iecfusiontech.blogspot.com\/2009\/09\/polywell-gets-dough.html\">EMC2 &#8211; Energy Matter Conversion Corp., Santa Fe, New Mexico<\/a> with a $7,855,504 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research, analysis, development, and testing in support of the Plan Plasma Fusion Project.\n<\/div>\n<p>-> related randform post:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.randform.org\/blog\/?p=211\"> Plasma Bubbles Again<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The current US science budget cuts were already mentioned in this previous post.
